Michael Van Ryn, bass

Double bassist Michael Van Ryn is currently principal bass of the Des Moines Symphony, assistant principal bass with Orchestra Iowa, and section bass in the Quad Cities Symphony. Mr. Van Ryn earned his bachelor's degree in music performance from the University of Minnesota in 2008 where he studied with James Clute, Peter Lloyd, and Christopher Brown. In 2010 he completed graduate studies in music performance at Northwestern University and during that time he served one year as principal bass of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. From 2010 to 2012 he studied at the University of Southern California with David Moore of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and served two years as principal bass of the American Youth Symphony. Recently, Mr. Van Ryn has had the opportunity to act as substitute bass with the Utah Symphony and the Minnesota Orchestra. Van Ryn has participated in several music festivals including the National Orchestral Institute, Pacific Music Festival in Japan, Music Academy of the West, Wabass, and Domaine Forget in Quebec, Canada. In 2012 he performed Puccini's La Boheme at the Royal Opera House in Muscat, Oman under the direction of Maestro Lorin Maazel. Mr. Van Ryn is a native of Winona, MN and this is his second summer at the Apollo Music Festival
